When I was building out the Open Corporation concept, a governance model for a consulting collective, one of the things I put in the deck was an always-on audio channel. Not a meeting. Not a scheduled call. Just a room that was open, where members could hear each other working, drop in for a quick question, or just feel like they weren’t completely alone in a home office.
I was freelancing at the time. The silence was its own kind of weight. You could go a whole day without hearing another human being unless you went looking for one. The idea wasn’t about collaboration. It was about ambient presence, that low-grade social signal that you’re part of something, that other people are out there, working, existing.
I filed it away as a feature nobody would actually implement and I started working from coffee shops.
A few years later, I had my team at Red Hat start running an always-open Zoom room.
The motivation was completely different. This was about team speed. When you share an office, you get a dynamic that’s hard to name but impossible to miss: someone mentions a problem, you overhear it three desks away, you spin around and solve it in thirty seconds. The feedback loop is tight. The cost of a question is basically zero.
A distributed team loses that. Everything becomes a Slack thread that drags across three time zones, or a meeting that gets scheduled for next Tuesday. The open Zoom room was an attempt to get the tight loop back. Leave it running. Work in it. Treat it like a shared office that happened to live in a browser tab.
Same pattern. Completely different reason.
Recently I noticed younger workers doing something similar, with a completely different framing. Running a call open all day with friends. Not coworkers. Friends. Sometimes while physically sitting in an office. Not for team speed, not exactly for social connection. Somewhere in between. Ambient community. A background presence that says someone else is out there living a parallel life.
They didn’t call it anything. It’s just something they do.
I’ve been in three different versions of the same conversation, spread across a decade (maybe longer), with people who had never heard of each other’s version.
Nobody read a study. Nobody was following a trend. Each time, someone had a real problem (isolation, team friction, disconnection) and independently landed on the same solution: leave a call open.
That’s the tell. When the same answer gets discovered independently, in different contexts, by people who aren’t comparing notes, it usually means the underlying need is real and persistent and the tools around it have been treating it as optional.
Remote work tooling has gotten very good at meetings. It has not gotten very good at presence. Every few years, someone patches the gap with an open call and a shrug.
The room keeps getting reinvented because nobody has made it first-class infrastructure yet.
